On the sun-dappled terraces of the Waipara Valley, where the Glasnevin Gravels crunch beneath careful boots and the Waipara River glimmers in the distance, a family’s dream took root. The story of Terrace Edge Wines is as striking as the Syrah they produce—a tale of bold beginnings, dedication, and the magic that comes from working in harmony with the land.
The Chapman family’s journey began in 1999 with an impulsive purchase of an old sheep farm. With no winemaking experience but plenty of determination, they set about transforming the rugged property. First came the olive trees—2,000 of them—and then, 12 hectares of vines. It was a trial-and-error adventure, but their hands-on approach mirrored the care and patience required to craft truly great wine. Over time, the Waipara Valley’s warm days, cool nights, and dry autumns proved the perfect recipe for wines of distinction.
From this rich tapestry emerges their New Zealand Syrah—a wine as vibrant and layered as the story behind it. Grown on ancient Glasnevin Gravels, the vines yield small harvests but deliver immense expression. The wine’s deep ruby hue catches the light, promising a sensory journey like no other. On the nose, it’s a symphony of dark autumnal fruits, cracked pepper, and aromatic spice, underscored by intriguing hints of briar and balsam.
